HIDDDEN PORTRAITS

Machine learning peels back the layers.

Great portraits reveal something that is hidden about a person. This year’s IBM THINK series used Watson to uncover hidden aspects about famous people. These were then turned into dazzlingly different executions utilizing a variety of technologies. Watson deemed our subject, Josephine Baker, to be an introvert. Beneath the banana skirt was a person with an inner world far more complex than people ever knew. Entitled, “Glamoflage,” as viewers approached the artwork more closely, the banana skin began to peel back to reveal little known aspects of the first black global super-star’s life.
